Plummer’s Arctic Lodge:

6th Annual Fly fishing week at Plummer’s Arctic Lodges: August 13-20/2011

Photo Gallery Available Here

In mid August we will be headed to the Northwest Territories to film and fish and Plummer's Arctic Lodge. While this is not a typical hosted trip (we will be off working and will not be hosting), we do invite anyone looking for an outstanding arctic fishing experience to join us at the lodge for the 6th annual fly fishing week. It is sure to be an unreal week of fishing and enjoying the beauty of the Northwest Territories.

Come visit the Canadian Arctic this summer and catch world class Arctic char, lake trout, and Arctic grayling. This is sold as a package which includes two nights atTree River, home to the biggest Arctic char in the world. Also included is a one day fly-out to a remote grayling river spectacular dry fly fishing. The rest of the time will be spent sight casting the shallows for big lake trout on Great Bear Lake.

We only have a two month season this far north so why did we choose the end of season to host the fly fishing week? Simple, it’s the best time of year for the fly rod. The trout are beginning to congregate in the shallows for the fall, the rivers are in prime shape (both water level and temperature), the char are in stunning red color and the grayling have kicked their feeding into overdrive to fatten up for the long winter. We hold the all tackle records (not to mention many tippet records) for char, trout and grayling and yet the kicker is the fishing is a bonus when visiting this part of the world.

The end of the season brings magnificent northern lights shows, fall colors and wildlife galore. The barren ground caribou are starting their fall migration shadowed by their natural predators- wolves and grizzly bears. Muskox are also commonly seen as they are feeding in preparation for the cold, dark winter. Visiting anglers usually see most of these species during their flight from Great Bear across the barren lands to the Tree River Outpost. On your way back to the main lodge from the Tree, you will stop at a small Inuit village and get a sense of what modern life is like for these aboriginal people. During a week-long trip to this part of the world it’s important, at times, to sit back and take it all in. It will be unlike any experience you’ve ever had. And what better place to take it in than on the patio back at the main lodge, enjoying your favourite refreshment and staring off at a sunset that last for hours. Wildlife, culture and the best fishing in the world- what could make a better trip?

Let Plummer’s Arctic Lodges make this a reality for you. We are the largest tourism operator in northern Canada with a proven track record for over 50 years. Please don’t hesitate to contact if you have any questions- [(800)665-0240 or www.plummerslodges.com]

Fishing:

We will be within a 15 to 45 min drive of each of these rivers; The Sol Duc, Bogachiel, Hoh & Queets. You will probably see time on each of these depending on how well each are fishing. A typical day starts EARLY. We grab a quick breakfast and head to the river. Usually in the dark. We nymph out of boats as well as use two handed rods to swing traditional steelhead water. If you prefer to nymph or swing exclusively it will be arranged. Lunches and snacks are served on the river - whenever you are hungry. We typically get off the river near sunset and head back to the lodge for dinner. If we stay out late on the water (which happens) we will eat in forks at one of the local restaurants. Depending on weather, this can be a physically demanding trip - you will probably be fishing long days in cold weather. If you are high maintenance at all... just stay home.

Gear:

We will be fishing in a Rain forest so dress appropriately. A GOOD raincoat, fleece, hat, sunglasses, breathable waders, felt boots (no studs please), warm socks,..etc. It is best to dress in layers. It can be cold in the morning and can warm up throughout the day (average temp is in the 50's although I have seen it warmer and colder). Rods to bring. A 8 or 9 wt with a good floating line and a reel with a good drag system. two handed 7-9 wt with the line and tips to match. If you need any of the above mentioned please let us know and we will accommodate.
