Fly fishing for redfish on the Texas coast… the simms cut.

In June of 2009 we found ourselves in remote northern Wyoming, fishing and filming with the crew at Rock Creek Anglers.  The area is off the beaten path, but that’s what we wanted – because as most trout anglers know – the further from civilization the better.  The fishing was stellar, we fished numerous small creeks that were filled with healthy wild trout – and the hatches were amazing. At any given time there were drakes, various species of stonefly, hoppers, caddis – everything – flying around and hitting the water. One of the best sessions of the year!

In June of 2009 we were touring the west shooting for our new film, Off the Grid, and stopped for a few days to fish with buddy John Huber from Ketchum on the Fly.  We ended up fishing Silver Creek for a few days and had some awesome action. On the first morning we arrived to find a nice mayfly hatch coming off. John hooked a little brown that almost became a meal for a big brown that showed out of nowhere.  We spent the evening fishing one of the thickest caddis hatches of the season… epic.

We spent much of the summer of 2009 chasing hatches across Colorado, collecting content for our new film Off the Grid. This video is a collection of some of our favorite shots from the summer. To learn more about our new film, click here.

Our friends at Rock Creek Anglers, in Saddlestring Wyoming, offer some of the best trout fishing in Wyoming. They have access to some of the best carp fishing we have ever seen. During the summer months, these fish pile up in the shallows and anglers can cast to pods of tailing fish in the shallows.

On some of the warmer winter days in Colorado, we see tremendous midge hatches, creating some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. In this video, Joey Macomber and RA Beattie wade through deep snow to reach a remote section of river – filled with rising trout.

In October of 2009 we headed to Mexico to film at Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca Lodge, in hopes of creating a segment for the Fly Fishing Film Tour.  Over the course of 10 days we (cameramen Joey Macomber and RA Beattie) documented a group from Ketchum on the Fly as they searched for Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon and Snook on the fly.  We had a great shoot and captured stunning media of Bonefish, Tarpon and Snook, but the Permit eluded us…

In December we had an opportunity to return to the lodge to finish the shoot. Again, things looked bleak as a bad northern storm pounded us all week.  On the last two days of the trip, however, we were granted a bit of sun and a break from the wind and were able to get out on the flats.  During this time Casa Blanca’s Eric Carvalho landed a beautiful Permit on film, then went on to land one of the largest Snook I have ever seen.

In 2007 we won an award for a short film called “Green Screen” in the Winston Fly Fishing Movie Awards. As a prize we were awarded a trip to film in Mexico for Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit.  This is a selection of the footage we shot that week….

We are currently shooting and editing our new film titled “Off the Grid.” Shot in Mexico, Alaska, British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Florida and a few surprise locations.

This fly fishing film is about places that are off the beaten path.  It is about people that live the fly fishing lifestyle, not to be a name, but because fly fishing is part of their soul. We took the day off from redfishing the other day and spent a few hours fly fishing on a nearby lake, chasing bass. They’ve been schooling up these days, crashing balls of shad and other bait fish. The scene is reminiscent of tuna hitting bait on the surface – and while the fish are not huge – it is very visual and exciting sport… Angler: Chris Hamilton.

During the fall of 2009 I traveled to southeast with my family. We explored a number of tributaries in search of silver salmon (which should have been in at this time), but found the rivers full of pinks. Despite the lack of silvers we had a fantastic time just watching the pinks gather in the small tribs and do what they came to do. Truly stunning country. About a week after we returned to the lower 48, I got phone call saying the silvers had arrived… and this is fishing.
